Michigan E. coli Database

CWS is working with MDEQ to identify existing data and information regarding E. coli for the surface waters of the state. Specifically, the Center is seeking to:

  • Identify existing E. coli databases;
  • Coordinate data and gain access to it in order to create a single data repository;
  • Characterize E. coli data collected;
  • Evaluate data for trends;
  • Investigate statistical tests that could provide meaningful assessment; and
  • Coordinate with other E. coli data collection efforts.

If you or your organization has E. coli or any coliform data for surface water, please click here and let us know.

95th Percentile Estimates
For this project, CWS is exploring the use of 95th percentile estimates for evaluating water quality. Please see the links below for more information on using the 95th percentile and an Excel spreadsheet to calculate percentile estimates:

Hazen Percentile calculator (xls file)
This spreadsheet was developed by Graham McBride at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand. More information about the calculator is available from the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment.

The Annapolis Protocol (pdf)
In 1999, EPA and the World Health Organization sponsored a conference of experts to discuss how to monitor and protect recreational waters. The meeting produced a strategy, now known as the Annapolis Protocol, for health-based monitoring and assessment linked to effective management of recreational waters.

European Union Bathing Water Directive (pdf)
The European Union uses percentile estimates for managing recreational water quality. The Bathing Water Directive describes the rules for monitoring and managing recreational waters.
